The Fifth Month: Clear Weather, a Morning Breeze at Ueno, 1890

Comments - Terrific scene of a swordfight from a kabuki play about the Battle of Ueno during Boshin or Toh Dai War of 1868 - 1869 between samurai loyal to the shogunate and Meiji Imperial troops. At right, Shinohara Kunimoto wears the distinctive shaguma or "Red Bear" wig that identifies him as a soldier from the Tosa Clan fighting for the emperor. He wields his sword with both hands as shots streak across the rainy sky. The samurai scowls angrily as he raises his weapon above his head, his light yellow jacket blowing in the breeze. Raindrops slant down across the sky, and flames rise from one of the temple buildings on fire at upper right. The actor at right is Onoe Kikugoro. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black uniform. A great bold design with large expressive figures, vibrant color, and a striking setting.
