Series; The First Series Selected Views of Kyoto

Visiting Kiyomizu Temple, 1925 - Charming portrait of a beauty paying a visit to Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. She pauses wash her hands in a large basin of water outside the shrine, using a wooden dipper, a white cloth caught between her teeth. She wears a black coat over a gray and rust kimono with flashes of print pink at the edges of the sleeves. At upper left, a nio or guardian figure is enclosed by a wire mesh, with lanterns hanging above the walkway at right. In the distance, visitors enjoy a view of the autumn scenery from the large verandah overlooking the valley as a full moon rises beyond the trees in the distance. This print is from the rare first edition, limited to 200 prints with seal numbered 70 on reverse (see detail below). A lovely design, beautifully detailed with embossed lines to indicate the folds of the white cloth.
