Sugawara no Michizane in Exile, 1884

Comments - Beautiful scene of the poet and calligrapher Sugawara no Michizane standing on a beach during his exile. He held many court prominent posts under Emperor Uda, but after the emperor abdicated, his political enemies demoted him and forced him into a minor post on the island of Kyushu, where he eventually died. Here, he stands on the shore, looking longing over his shoulder at a crescent moon in the dark night sky. An ancient pine tree with gnarled roots frames the scene at right, with boats pulled up on the sand and rugged rocks dotting the shoreline. The moon is reflected on the shimmering surface of the sea, and the sky is dotted with stars. Beautifully detailed with a delicate silver mica pattern on the white lining of his robe. A lovely image conveying the loneliness of this exiled scholar.
