Kusunoki Masatsura Saves the Poet Ben no Naishi at Kawachi, 1897

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting the young samurai Kusunoki Masatsura at Kawachi at right, scowling with anger as his retainers point out warriors attacking an enclosed palanquin at left, which holds the poet Ben no Naishi. He and his men came to the rescue of the poet, who was waylaid by the samurai of another lord. Kusunoki Masatsura sadly died at the age of twenty-two, committing suicide after being fatally injured at the Battle of Shijo Nawate. The exemplary Masatsura became the subject of many tales illustrating his honor and bravery. Here, he sits astride a white horse beneath a blossoming cherry tree, raising his fan above his head, a quiver of arrows slung at his side. A full moon glows in the evening sky. Nicely composed and detailed.

Artist - Rosetsu (active circa 1890s - 1904)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. A few pinholes in top corners. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
