Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Minakuchi: Panoramic View of Mount Iwafuri, 1855 - Beautiful print from the collaborative Hiroshige and Toyokuni III Tokaido Road series. Hiroshige's beautiful landscape in the background illustrates the harbor at Minakuchi with tiny travelers perched atop a dramatic hill overlooking the water. In the foreground, Toyokuni III depicts the beauty Ofude and Banba Chuta fighting in the "Sasahiki" scene from the kabuki play "Hiragana Seisuiki." The beauty holds a scroll in her mouth as she attacks the samurai with her sword, while he blocks the blow with his own weapon. Fine color and detail in this intriguing print, with embossing on the white kimono.
