Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Mitsuke: The Ferry on the Tensyn River, 1854 - Handsome image from a Tokaido series jointly designed by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III between 1854 - 1857. Hiroshige created the landscape backgrounds while Toyokuni III designed the foreground figures. Here, a beauty and a man pause to smoke a pipe as they wait for the ferry across the Tensyn River at Mitsuke. The beauty lifts her hat as she looks up, a slender pipe in her other hand. She wears a striped blue kimono patterned with large tie-dyed blossoms over a red under robe, and white tabi socks and straw sandals. Her companion kneels beside her, his tobacco pouch and pipe case in one hand as he gestures with his pipe. Above, ferries move passengers across the water past a sand bar, with the edge of a boat framing the scene at right. A nicely detailed subject with soft shading in the water and sky.
