From an untitled series of horizontal oban kabuki prints

Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

Scene from the Higashiyama Storybook, 1847 - 1852 - Poignant scene from a play commonly known as "The Higashiyama Storybook," based on a true story. The local mayor Asakura Togo decided to petition the shogun directly for tax relief for his impoverished town, bypassing the crooked governor. Knowing that doing so will mean the death penalty for him, so he is torn between doing his duty and parting from his family. Here, he takes one last glance at his wife and three sons as he leaves.
