Suma Bay in Settsu, 1862 - Terrific scene from a collaboration done by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III depicting an updated Prince Genji in fashionable modern dress rather than the clothing of the Heian era when the novel was written. The young prince stands in the center, grinning as he looks up, wearing a violet coat over a blue-gray kimono tied with a checked obi. At right, a young beauty smiles as she kneels beside a koto, a stack of books, a black lacquer box, and a fan on the floor nearby. A jagged diagonal separates the figures against a green background from a view of the bay at Suma, where smoke rises from a small thatched hut where seawater is being evaporated to leave the salt, and a flock of birds flies across the sky. A striking design, beautifully detailed.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes, small loss at corner, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
