by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a rogue and two samurai on a ship, startled as a flock of birds takes flight above the water. The rogue looks up with a frown, his brows furrowed, one hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. He wears a boldly patterned outer robe over a black kimono with splashing yellow waves and a suit of armor, his short hair sticking up atop his head with the longer locks pulled back into a low ponytail. The fellow at right recoils backwards, throwing his hand out in alarm, while the young man at left leans forward with a concerned expression. The actors include Kawarazaki Kunitaro in the left panel and Kawarazaki Gonnusuke in the right panel. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono collar and obi at left, and the rogue's short hair atop his head.
