From an untitled series of actor portraits

Sawamura Tanosuke III as the Courtesan Shikishima, 1869 - Terrific okubi-e or large head kabuki portrait of the actor Sawamura Tanosuke III as the courtesan Shikishima. She looks out of the corner of her eyes with a sly grin, holding her sleeve up before her. She wears a red striped kimono with a blue collar over a red under robe with a tie-dyed collar in bands of green and red. Her hair is pulled back into a large knot, tied with a light blue ribbon, a wisp framing her face and two long locks falling over her shoulders. Beautifully printed with extremely fine line work in the hair. A bold, striking design set off by the jewel-tone blue background.
