by Shuncho (active circa 1780 - 1795)
Adachi Publisher - This beautiful reprint is from the famous Tokyo publisher Adachi, one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Adachi woodblocks were printed to the highest standards of quality with excellent color and fine detail. The Adachi woodblock printers were known to be the best in the business. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images. This print is sealed with the Adachi seal in ink.
Comments - Wonderful Shuncho design of beauties boarding a pleasure boat for an evening on the cool river. In the center, a servant carries a tray of food and a round lantern swinging from a pole, a green apron tied over her striped kimono, while at right a beauty steps aboard the waiting vessel. Fields stretch out along the opposite shore under the darkening sky. A charming view of this favorite summer pastime, with fine detail and soft shading in the water and sky.
Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
