Crossing the Great Oi River, 1853

Comments - Fantastic scene of travelers crossing the Oi River, the water crowded with porters carrying customers across the wide waterway. Several beauties ride sitting atop platforms, while at center, a woman reclines in an enclosed palanquin. In the front two women chat and smoke pipes as they ride of the shoulders of bearers. The snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji rises above the opposite shore as a faint red glow spreads along the horizon. A terrific triptych full of activity and interesting detail, with soft shading in the sky and water.
