Gekko's Essays - Begun in 1886, "Gekko's Essays" (Zuihitsu) is a wonderful series encompassing a wide range of subjects. Gekko depicts figures from history and mythology, including famous beauties, poets, scholars, and warriors, along with a few supernatural creatures. These handsome designs are rendered in Gekko's distinctive painterly style, with soft washes of color and flowing calligraphic line work, expertly printed by Matsuki Heikichi to capture these qualities. The series was completed by 1887, but woodblocks are found with dates up to 1899, proving the popularity of the designs, which continued to be printed. A great choice to collect or display.
The Nine-tailed Fox - Fantastic supernatural scene of a magical nine-tailed fox flying through the air. According to a 12th century legend, the Emperor Toba fell in love with the beautiful Lady Tamamo, a palace lady-in-waiting. Soon after, he became increasingly ill. His astrologer discovered that Lady Tamamo was actually an evil nine-tailed fox, who had been causing the emperor's illness. The beauty suddenly transformed back into a fox, making her escape. She is shown here floating up into the sky, her true form revealed beneath her flowing court robes, which flutter behind her in the dark night sky. Grasses wave on the plain below as the fox looks down with an evil grin, its teeth bared. A terrific image from this famous tale, beautifully detailed with fine line work in the hair and wonderful handling of the transparency of the robes. A great choice for a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legend.
