July: Tanabata Festival - Charming image from a series depicting different activities for the months of the year. For July, the young girl at right is setting out to attend the "Komachi Odori" or "Young Ladies Dance" during the Tanabata or Star Festival. Tanabata celebrates the annual meeting of the lovers the Weaver Princess and the Herdsboy in the night sky (the stars Vega and Altair respectively), as shown in the circular inset at upper left. The clouds surrounding the couple are rendered in flowing embossed lines, a lovely detail. A handsome design from this rarely seen Gekko series.

Artist - Gekko (1859 - 1920)

Image Size - 9" x 13" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots and stains. Please see photos for details.
