These prints are from a single set of reprints produced in 1920 right before Goyo’s death. Goyo’s fine reprints are considered to be the highest quality reprints produced in the 20th century.

Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e prints from the golden age of the print period. In 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints. Each print was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim. Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and extremely rare to find. Hashiguchi Goyo Studio 1919 Reprint Edition - Hashiguchi Goyo is one of the most famous and admired artists of 20th century Japanese woodblocks. In addition to producing his own designs, his studio also created exceptionally high-quality reprints of masterworks by artists such as Hiroshige, Utamaro, Hokusai, and Harunobu. This lovely Hiroshige Great Tokaido series was published by Goyo in 1919, shortly before the artist's death in 1920 (see example of publisher's label below, not included).

Sparing no expense in production, these prints feature finely carved details, fresh color, and soft bokashi shading that truly distinguish them from lesser reproductions. Each print has the red rectangular Goyo seal in the margin. These prints are considered some of the rarest and most valuable reprints on the market. As the production numbers for this series was quite low, they are almost impossible to find on the market today. An excellent opportunity to acquire a classic ukiyo-e design in a beautiful Goyo Studio edition.
