Scene from Inaka Genji, 1847 - 1852 - Handsome scene from the story "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" (A False Murasaki and a Country Genji), a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji. Here, the young Mitsuuji sits on the verandah at left, waiting to visit the beauty playing the koto inside. In the center, a woman points out his arrival to the beauty, who smiles eagerly as she looks up from the instrument. The room overlooks a garden with a large pond, and flame flickers in an ornate lamp with an iris base. Outside, the young man tilts his head, smiling shyly as relaxes, having kicked off one sandal and tucked his foot up underneath him. Lovely color and detail in the attractive setting and elegant clothing, with fine shading in the cloud-shaped borders.
