by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Comments - Dramatic kabuki triptych featuring two scenes from the famous ghost story "The Broken Dishes at Bancho Mansion" (Bancho Saryashiki). At left, two men fight a duel beside a large waterwheel, the splashing water providing a dramatic setting. The fellow in the center lifts a sharpened stick of wood above his head with both hands as his opponent thrusts a sword at his chest. The men scowl at each other angrily, each dressed in a boldly patterned robe. At right, a young beauty looks anxiously up at the evil samurai Aoyama Tetsuzan, who stares back at her glumly, a slender pipe in his hand. He wears a fine brocade coat with a black collar over a purple kimono. A handsome design with large expressive figures and vibrant color.
