Hiroshige by Yone Noguchi - This beautiful 2-volume boxed set titled "Hiroshige" was written by Yone Noguchi and published in 1940 to commemorate the 2600th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire. Written in English, Volume I is primarily text and includes a preliminary essay and life of Hiroshige, with commentary notes on the illustrations in Volume II. The illustrations include 5 color woodblock prints by Watanabe, along with 6 color lithograph plates, 5 black and white collotype plates, and numerous black and white lithograph images. The woodblocks fold out and feature a tissue overlay with information. The book was printed and made in Japan for Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd., London, and Maruzen Co., Ltd, Tokyo. The five color woodblocks are: Twilight Moon at Ryogoku Bridge, Shono Rain from the Great Tokaido, Crescent Moon over Monkey Bridge, and the Tone River by Hiroshige, along with a memorial portrait of Hiroshige by Toyokuni III. Some of the woodblocks have the Watanabe 6 mm seal. The inside of the case is lined with a lovely aizuri-e or all blue woodblock of Hiroshige's famous "Mountains and Rivers of Kiso" triptych.
