by Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)
Portraits of the Forty-seven Ronin, with a Biographical Sketch of Each Ronin - Intriguing 47 ronin series by Yoshitora published in 1885 in Yokohama by Tanaka Umesaburo, aimed at the Western market with text in English. These attractive prints feature portraits of each ronin during the night attack on Moronao's mansion, accompanied by a biographical sketch. It also includes a full oban triptych depicting the attack inside the palace. These images are nicely detailed with touches of embossing and burnishing, and the addition of metallic pigment for swords and spears, which has oxidized to a darker tone. A great chance to acquire a complete 47 ronin series with an unusual Yokohama connection.
