by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Comments - Great depiction of the woman warrior Tomoe gozen during the Battle of Awazu, fighting Uchida Ieyoshi at left and Hatakeyama no Shigetada at right. She charges ahead on a black horse, slipping out of the reach of Shigetada, who holds a shoulder plate torn loose from her armor. Gripping her naginata high, she maintains her seat in the saddle with her other hand thrust out at her side. At left, Ieyoshi grimaces angrily as he raises his sword, staring at the beauty. Behind a pine tree at left, an archer aims at Minamoto no Yoshinaka, whose horse has become stuck in the mud. A lively scene with colorful figures and a striking night setting.
