Teaching Shogun Taro Yoshikado, Princess Takiyasha, and Iga Jutaro in a Cave, 1850

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the young samurai Shoguntaro Yoshikado, Princess Takiyasha, and Iga Jutaro meeting in a cave. The son and daughter of slain warrior Shogun Soma no Masakado, the pair vowed to avenge his death with the assistance of Iga Jutaro, one of Masakado's trusted retainers. To that end, they learned to practice toad magic to defeat their enemies. Yoshikado stares over his shoulder with an angry frown, a dragon print kimono draped over his shoulders. His purple robe features a subtle burnished pattern. Takiyasha-hime smiles back at him as she flings one sleeve above her head, her long hair falling loosely over her shoulders. At right, Iga Jutaro grimaces with rage, his eyes bulging and his hand clenched into a fist. He wears a black fur vest over his kimono. The mouth of the cave frames the darkness behind them, with autumn vines growing around the entrance. A great design with expressive figures and wonderful detail.
