Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Fujisawa: Terute-hime and the Gateway to Yugyo-ji Temple, 1854 - Handsome design from "The Tokaido by Two Brushes," a collaborative series with landscapes by Hiroshige and figures by Toyokuni III. The foreground features a scene from the life of the legendary 15th century horseman Oguri Hangan Daisukeshige. An enemy had poisoned Oguri, resulting in paralyzing him. In an effort to save his life, Oguri's beloved wife, Princess Terute, pulled the crippled warrior in a wooden cart to Kumano Gongen shrine to bathe in the healing waterfall there. She pulls the cart along by a rope draped over her shoulder, looking down soberly. Above, Hiroshige shows a view of Fujisawa with travelers making their way along the Tokaido Road under towering pine trees, with the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji beyond. Nicely detailed with embossing on the dog's fur. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
