Reading a Letter, circa 1840 - Attractive scene of a beauty reading a letter with a young boy waiting at her side. The woman studies the message as the child looks up at her with an eager expression, a cloth-wrapped parcel beside him waiting to be opened and an open lacquer box on the floor nearby. The beauty wears a tan kimono with a pattern of pine trees, plum blossoms, and bamboo, tied with a geometric print obi. An inset at upper left takes the form of an open book, while the title cartouche is surrounded by flowering irises. A charming image from this rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
