by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of otokodate or street knights struggling over a banner at the water's edge. At left, Tokubei grabs hold of one end of the scroll, sneering as he grips his sword. His companion in the center glares back at him with a tight-lipped frown, while the boatman at right tumbles backwards. The men wear loose kimono and their hair is wet and straggling over their shoulders. A circular inset at upper right depicts the infamous Danshichi Kurobei, wearing a boldly checked kimono with the sleeve pushed up to reveal his upper body tattoo. Boats in silhouette with glowing red lanterns can be seen on the water in the distance below the evening sky. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro as Issun Tokubei, Nakamura Shikan, Nakamura [?], and Nakamura Shikan as Danshichi Kurobei in the circular inset. A lively design with large, expressive figures.
