by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as the famed 16th century general Kato Kiyomasa. He strikes a pose with his naginata in one hand, his other arm flung out beside him as he stares ahead with a stern expression. He wears a fine suit of armor over a purple brocade kimono, his hair pulled back into a wild ponytail with curly locks on either side of his head, his long beard falling over his chest. A tile roof stretches across the background, with a broken wooden grill or window at right. A bold design with lively color and wonderful detail, including touches of burnishing on the armor and hair. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu design.
