Ichikawa Danjuro as Kato Kiyomasa, 1878 by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Danjuro as Kato Kiyomasa, 1878

Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as the famed 16th century general Kato Kiyomasa. He strikes a pose with his naginata in one hand, his other arm flung out beside him as he stares ahead with a stern expression. He wears a fine suit of armor over a purple brocade kimono, his hair pulled back into a wild ponytail with curly locks on either side of his head, his long beard falling over his chest. A tile roof stretches across the background, with a broken wooden grill or window at right. A bold design with lively color and wonderful detail, including touches of burnishing on the armor and hair. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small losses and thinning at edge, repaired. Creasing, slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
