The Great Battle of Okido in Oshu Province, 1860

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the Battle of Okido in Oshu Province. At right, a general in a horned battle helmet grabs an enemy from behind, the men grimacing at each other face to face as they struggle. His enemy wears an incredible personal standard in the form of a dragon climbing a sword, and his billowing blue and white cape identifies him as a messenger or important person. In the center, a samurai on horseback unseats an enemy from his mount with his spear. At left, a warrior on a dappled horse tumbles over the side of a steep cliff as another rider on a black horse watches with a stunned expression. A dramatic image with a striking natural setting, beautifully colored and detailed.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)
