Whirlpools of Awa

Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers

Whirlpools of Awa - Lovely view of the famous whirlpools of Awa. This beautiful natural scene shows the swirling currents around the rocky shoreline, the water rushing and eddying in white-capped waves. A wonderful image of this famous site, with beautiful color and soft shading. Originally designed as a triptych, this reprint is unusual in that it is printed on one sheet rather than three.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.

Image Size - 15" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two vertical folds. Slight separation at ends of folds. Slight soiling, slight rubbing along folds, a few creases and marks. Please see photos for details.
