One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets - A popular subject for Japanese woodblock print artists, "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets" is a famous anthology of classical Japanese waka poems collected in the thirteenth century by the poet and calligrapher Fujiwara no Teika. This 1808 series features illustrations by Mitsusada Tosa of the Tosa School with calligraphy by Shibayama Yutaka. Each portrait features a poet in court attire seated on a low platform with a verse in calligraphy above. Each facial expression is different, and some of the poets hold objects such as folding fans or prayer beads. Waseda University has this subject in its collection.
