Crowds at the Celebration of the Proclamation of the Constitution, 1889

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene depicting crowds celebrating the proclamation of Japan's Constitution. Actors are dressed as participants in the festivities with two beauties dressed as men at right and a man in the center with a peony atop his hat to accompany a lion dancers. Behind him, a man wears a bowler hat and has small Japanese flags pinned to his kimono. A fellow at left holds a banner while the man next to him has wooden clappers. A border of clouds separates the figures from a view of the procession with colorful floats making their way down the street in front of the Imperial Palace. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Ichikawa Sadanji, Onoe Kikugoro, Ichikawa Danjuro, Nakamura Fukusuke, and Sawamura Gennosuke. The first time we've seen this intriguing design. Interestingly, this print is backed with original ink drawings.
