Battle at Toyama Castle in the Snow, 1890

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a battle in the snow from the play "Toyama-jo Yukidoke no Kiyomizu." At right, Hashiba Chikuzen Mamuro Hideyoshi at right wears an unusual woven straw jacket and helmet, gripping a bow in one hand and a pair of arrows in the other. The samurai in the center lifts his lacquer hat high above his head as he stares back at his companion, while simultaneously collaring another man by the neck. A third straw-raincoated warrior watches at left as he tugs on a rope with both hands, his hat covered with snow. Snowflakes fall heavily against the blue sky and clumps of snow shower down over the men from the trees above. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Ichikawa Sadanji (top), and Onoe Kikugoro. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and clothing. An intriguing subject.
