Umegae, Chapter 32: Kan Shojo Michizane Ko, 1864 - Fantastic portrait of Kan Shojo Michizane Ko in the play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." The drama is based on the life of Sugawara no Michizane, a famous scholar falsely accused of plotting against the prince and sent into exile, where he continued to write poetry. Here, Kan Shojo clenches a blossoming plum branch in one hand as he stares ahead angrily, calling up a thunderstorm. Jagged bolts of lightning zigzag across the scene amidst dark clouds. His long hair falls over his shoulders with shorter hair sticking up above his head, and his face has the bluish cast of a spirit or corpse. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A striking design.
