Matsumoto Kinsho I as Haradamaru Naotoshi and Matsumoto Koshiro V as a Painting of a Tengu, 1849 - Intriguing kabuki scene of the samurai Haradamaru Naotoshi kneeling on the ground beside a large painting of a tengu hanging from a tree. The warrior grabs the end of a cloud patterned banner with an angry grimace, his brows furrowed. Tengu are winged spirits or demons known for their fencing abilities, depicted either with human faces or bird-like beaks. The tengu looks to the side with a stern expression, his long black hair and beard falling over his robe as he clutches a vajra, a ritual weapon. An interesting and unusual subject.
