Moon Viewing Banquet at Seaside Villa, 1886

Comments - Beautiful scene of a moon viewing banquet at a seaside villa. Ladies-in-waiting dressed in elegant kimono over white robes tucked into flowing hakama pants stroll across the floral carpeted room. The woman at right carries an offering tray piled with sweets while another beauty kneels beside her holding a lantern. At right, the Meiji Emperor gestures to the glowing full moon as he stands on a verandah wearing a military uniform, his sword bearer at his side. A beautiful garden overlooks the water with steps leading to a structure atop a rocky outcropping. Lovely color and detail in the sumptuous fabrics and interior, which includes a modern chandelier and fine reed blinds. Includes burnishing on the black uniform. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
