Portrait of Genji Enjoying the Evening Cool, 1865

Comments - Terrific triptych showing Prince Genji and beauties viewing fireworks from a pleasure boat. The young nobleman holds a glass goblet of sake as he looks over his shoulder, smiling as an explosion of red sparks lights up the night sky. A red lacquer tray at his feet holds refreshments, and an attendant leans forward eagerly with a bottle of sake, offering to refill his glass. A party of women watches from another boat at right, one beauty leaning against the roof of the cabin, while in the ship at left, beauties play shamisen. A handsome design with the large figures in the foreground and the river crowded with ships beyond. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. An attractive Edo era subject with fine shading in the water and sky.
