Two Prawns, 1924 by Yamamura Toyonari (Koka) (1885 - 1942)

Original Yamamura Toyonari (Koka) (1885 - 1942) Japanese Woodblock Print
Two Prawns, 1924

Comments - Although best known for his masterful shin-hanga kabuki portraits done for Watanabe, Yamamura Toyonari also created a number of woodblocks of other subjects. In 1924, Toyonari left Watanabe and began self-publishing kacho-e or birds and flowers prints, landscapes, and still-lifes. They feature a modern, painterly style, with simplified shapes, fluid brushwork, and soft bokashi shading. These lovely designs demonstrate his versatility as an artist and are a great choice for a shin-hanga collector. Toyonari was one of just 10 artists included in the landmark 1936 Toledo Museum of Art show "Modern Japanese Prints." A rare shin-hanga design.
