Commoner with a Gun, 1860

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place along the shore. At left, a commoner sprawls on the ground, grimacing and pointing at gun at the warrior Saito Kuranosuke in the center. Kuranosuke frowns back at him unhappily, gripping his sword with both hands. He wears an interesting battle helmet with an attached flap falling over his back. The samurai at right waves his sword, pointing it at Kuranosuke, looking down with a strange expression. A circular inset at upper left shows a courtesan with a worried expression. Kataoka Nizaemon plays Kuranosuke, and Nakamura Fukusuke is the samurai at right. A great design with expressive figures and a handsome night setting at the water's edge.
