Rival Sumo Wrestlers Chogoro and Chokichi, 1852

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from a play about two rival sumo wrestlers. The older, more experienced sumo Nuregami no Chogoro purposely lost a match to the young Hanaregoma Chokichi in hopes of earning a favor from his patron. Here the two wrestlers meet in front of a house, with Chokichi in the center reacting with a petulant frown as Chogoro reveals the truth about the match. At right, Chogoro throws his hands out as he tries to explain, grimacing angrily. His blue outer robe is pushed down to the waist to reveal a red kimono patterned with fish. At left, the woman Oseki eavesdrops outside the gate, her eyes wide as she hears their conversation. In the center, straw-wrapped casks of sake are stacked against the wall. A handsome design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
