The Great Battle between the Genji and Heike at Yashima, 1881

Comments - Terrific depiction of the naval Battle of Yashima between the Minamoto and Taira during the Genpei War. At left, Minamoto no Yoshitsune executes his legendary "eight boat leap," crouching behind a wooden shield as he flies through the air, seemingly weightless as orange smoke drifts across the water from the fire baskets of the fleet. At right, two warriors grapple on the deck of a boat, one man grabbing the other from behind. The Taira flagship is shown in the center, with a magnificent rooster or phoenix prow. The child Emperor Antoku is carried in the arms of his grandmother, surrounded by ladies in waiting under a fluttering red and silver mica brocade banner. A dramatic image with wonderful action and energy. This is a posthumous printing dated 1899.
