Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan and Guests

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a courtesan entering guests in her private quarters. The young man in the center looks up at her with a worried frown as he steps on the hem of her kimono, a sword plunged into the floor at his side. She throws her hand out in a stopping gesture as she tries to walk away. At left, a seated man grimaces angrily, a small cup in his hand. At right, a striped screen decorated with two butterflies provides privacy for the bed at right. Nice expressive figures in a handsome interior setting.

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 28 1/2"
