Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Dancers and Monks, 1862

Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych from the classic play "Musume Dojoji," depicting two shirabyoshi dancers and several monks under large temple bell framed by a blossoming cherry tree. The women are dressed in red floral kimono and carry fans, each with a white cloth pinned to her head to protect her elaborate hairstyle. The beauty at right looks up at the bell with a strange expression as the monks watch her with growing unease, one scratching his head with a puzzled expression. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV as the shirabyoshi dancer Sakurako, Ichikawa Danzo as Sanzarubo, Seki Sanjuro III as Utayamabo, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the shirabyoshi dancer Hanako. An interesting image with delicate embossing on the white cherry blossoms. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
