Oguri Hangan Balancing His Horse on a Go Board, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the legendary 15th century horseman Oguri Hangan Daisukeshige astride his brown horse balancing atop a go board, to the astonishment of the noblemen gathered before him. The young warrior grasps the reins with a determined expression as the horse rears on its hind legs, snorting and showing its teeth. An elderly noble sits on the verandah of a palace, watching solemnly as his assembled retainers stare wide eyed and open mouthed. Cherry trees bloom in the courtyard, surrounded by a tall woven fence. Wonderful detail and expressive faces. An incredible subject and a great choice for a collector interested in go prints or the samurai tradition.
