Night Rain at Hashiba

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Lovely Buncho design of a courtesan standing on the verandah in the Hashiba district in Edo. She runs a comb through her hair as she looks out at water below, rain slanting across the evening sky. A boat ferries a passenger across the river, and stacks of wood at a lumberyard can be seen on the opposite shore. Lovely embossed lines indicating the flowing current of the river. A charming image with soft color and fine line work.

Artist - Buncho (active 1765 - 1792)
