Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a play about the 47 ronin. In the center, the samurai Senzaki Yagoro, a retainer of Lord Hangan, holds a sword upright as he frowns angrily at the traveler at left. A river crossing porter sprawls on the ground before Yagoro, grimacing up at him angrily. The traveler reacts with alarm, his eyes wide and a worried expression on his face as he scratches his head, a woven hat in his other hand. At right, the young Taishiro Rikiya smiles pleasantly as he fans himself, seemingly unconcerned about the commotion. He wears a furry coat over a blue kimono tucked into boldly patterned pants. The scene takes place along the water's edge, with a stone embankment below and mountains lining the opposite shore. The actors include Nakamura Gentaro as the laborer, Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Yagoro, and Sawamura Tanosuke as Rikiya. Nice expressive figures in an attractive natural setting.
