Akechi Samanosuke Resting after Swimming across Lake Biwa, 1893

Comments - Terrific image of the great warrior Akechi Samanosuke Mitsuharu resting after swimming across Lake Biwa to escape the Hori clan following his defeat at a battle in Uchide-hama. He sits on the root of a gnarled old pine tree, fanning himself and wearing a black dragon vest over a suit of armor, and a battle helmet topped with ears. His dappled horse is tied to a branch by its striped reins, still wearing its saddle. Waves lap along the shore below, the water fading off into the distance. A dramatic image with wonderful detail in the armor and horse equipment, including touches of burnishing.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 27 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight toning, a few small marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
