Illustration of the Prospering Maeda Clan, 1879

Comments - Interesting depiction of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and members of the nobility attending a kabuki theater performance. The emperor and his wife sit on a platform at top center, with their guests sitting on chairs below. On the stage in the foreground, actors perform a scene from the play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), where Yoshitsune and his men attempt to sneak across the Ataka Border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. Beautifully detailed with a burnished pattern on the green coat of the monk in the center, embossing on the white pants of the actor at right, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the clouds on the red panels lining the back of the room. The first time we've had this handsome Chikanobu design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 12 3/4" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with somewhat stiff paper. Light vertical centerfold. Slight soiling, a few stains. Please note: due to the size, this print may be shipped rolled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
