Night Attack of the Soga Brothers, 1882

Comments - Fantastic scene of the Soga Brothers attacking their father's murderer Suketsune at the shogun's hunting camp. The startled nobleman sits up on his bed, grasping a sword with one hand, his other arm thrown out in alarm as Sogo Goro stares at him coldly. With one foot crushing a wicker basket underfoot, Goro slowly draws his sword from its sheath as he prepares to attack. At left, his older brother Juro grips a blade over his head with both hands, ready to finally avenge his father's death. The room is in disarray, with an oil lamp overturned and screens knocked over. The beauty Oiso no Tora, who is Juro's lover, kneels in the next room, sheltering a lamp under her kimono sleeve after allowing the brothers into the lodge to achieve their vengeance. A great image, beautifully drawn with realistic, expressive figures and a handsomely detailed setting.
