The 47 Ronin, Acts 3 and 4: The Quarrel at the Palace and Lord Hangan's Suicide - Terrific design illustrating Acts 3 and 4 from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin. The scene at top shows the quarrel at the palace from Act 3, where Lord Hangan is goaded into striking Lord Moronao, an offense punishable by death. In Act 4 below, Yuranosuke gathers Lord Hangan's retainers outside the gate of his master's palace. He has just learned that Hangan has been forced to commit suicide, and he vows to avenge his death. He scowls as he shakes a lantern above his head, urging his fellow retainers to join him in his vendetta. Beautifully colored with wonderful detail in the settings.
