Kabuki Characters, 1895

Comments - Interesting group portrait of an assortment of kabuki characters from different plays. At bottom center, a Chinese nobleman looks up with a frown, dressed in an elegant tunic patterned with phoenixes and trimmed with layers of ruffles. At upper right, a man carries a red-faced tengu mask with a long nose and flowing white hair and beard. At upper left, a monkey trainer grins as his animal climbs over his shoulder, a red and white striped pole used for tricks in his hand. The beauty next to him carries a bow and arrow. Great expressive figures, detailed with fine line work in the hair and touches of burnishing and embossing.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
