Ashikaga Yorikane and the Courtesan Takao, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Dramatic scene from a tale about the daimyo Ashikaga Yorikane and the beautiful courtesan Takao. The nobleman fell in love with the beauty, and began neglecting his official duties prompting some of his retainers to plot to overthrow him. After a servant convinced Takao to break off her affair with Yorikane, the incensed daimyo killed her. In this fantastic scene, Takao has leapt over the side of a boat, but a samurai grabs her by the hair, drawing his sword as the young woman struggles to free herself. At left, Yorikane looks slyly over the top of his folding fan, making no move to intervene. An interesting design, nicely detailed.
