Playing Games in the Garden of the Kankanro in the Yoshiwara, circa 1794

Comments - Charming scene of beauties playing games in the garden of the Kankanro in the Yoshiwara. At lower left, a beauty reaches forward as she runs ahead while the kamuro or child apprentice behind her claps her hands with delight. One of the courtesans at right smiles as she watches, holding her sleeve to her chin, while her companion smokes a slender pipe. She wears an outer kimono patterned with cranes in flight over delicately embossed kimono tied with a geometric print obi. In the teahouse above, customers enjoy sake and refreshments with two beauties, one of the men playing a shamisen. A waitress carries a tray of food through the doorway at the back of the room. An attractive eighteenth-century design, beautifully detailed. Includes additional embossing on the girl's kimono and obi and the robe of the woman at left.
